Intergenerational Grammar families

Many Old Boys come from multi-generational families, following in the footsteps of their fathers and grandfathers, paving the way for their sons and grandsons to come and continuing on the tradition of a full Grammar experience. While academic remains at the heart of the School’s ethos, the extracurriculars - including cultural, musical and sporting pursuits - are just as important to give students a well-rounded education. The 1st XV Rugby team, who are currently in second place on the 1A competition table, played their last home game at the end of Term 2 against neighbours St Peter’s College, and it was fantastic to see so many current students and Old Boys on the sidelines supporting the team, including Dave Wrathall '75. Part of a three-generation family, Dave was a Prefect and captain of the 1st XI Football team in his final year in 1979, before becoming a master at the School for three years in the 1980s, teaching Mathematics, Biology and Science. Dave’s brother Peter is also an Old Boy (from the class of 1977) and Dave’s son Nicholas finished at Grammar in 2013. Dave followed in the footsteps of his father John, who was also captain of the 1st XI Football team in both 1953 and 1954, and was named as a New Zealand representative in 1954.
