2020 STAFF AWARD RECIPIENTS

The 2021 recipient of the Joseph McManemin Award: Sylvain Bidet. Sylvain plays a major role in the life of the School as co-Master in Charge of the Distance Squad and Master in Charge of the Duke of Edinburgh programme. He also assisted with Form 4 camps and a number of French groups and has been the Language Faculty E-Learning Mentor.

The 2021 recipient of the Hatch Coaching Award: Warren Buckingham. Warren is Head of Latin and Head of Faculty - Languages. Warren has single-handedly grown the sport of Disc Ultimate within the School as the Master in Charge and the sole coach and manager of all of the School's teams. The Disc Ultimate Number 1 team have been perennial National Champions under Warren's guidance.

The 2021 recipient of the John Hume Award: Richard Daniel. Richard is the Master in Charge of Tennis and coaches the Junior A1 team. He also runs the Asian Board Games Club, is a Tuakana Teina mentor and assisted with Form 4 camps.

The 2021 recipient of the Grammar TEC Rugby Club Award: Zac King. Zac has been a member of the teaching staff over the last two years and has a passion for Rugby, which has led him to share this as coach of the 2nd XV Rugby team. He has also accepted the additional role as Master in Charge of Touch Rugby.

The 2021 recipient of the Bob Narev Award for Latin/Classics: Sue Haywood. Sue is a Classics and Latin teacher. She plays a major role in the School as manager of the Symphony Orchestra and assists with Prizegiving organisation.

The 2021 recipient of the Kwek Award: Simon Lassche. Simon is a Chemistry master and the Form 7 Boarding Master at Tibbs House. He also coaches and manages the Premier Squash team who were fourth at nationals this year.

The 2021 recipient of the Lyn Rawlinson Award: Simone Bayley. Simone is Head of Learning Support and teaches English Literacy. She also coaches the Junior 4 debating team and has supported the Interact Group, taking on leadership of the group next year.

The 2021 recipient of the Munro Award: Jitesh Sima. Jitesh is the 1st XI Hockey team's Assistant Coach. He picked up the duties willingly early in the season and helped the 1st XI win the Auckland Championship. He coached a Junior Development Cricket team and assisted with Form 4 camps.

The 2021 recipient of the Ray Wilson Award: Campbell Lowe. Campbell is Master in Charge of Rowing and a Rowing coach. He is also the Form 5 Associate Dean, the Form 3 Boarding Master at Tibbs House and a Physical Education Master.

The 2021 recipient of the Music Award: Eddie Hare. Eddie is a Music Master with a speciality in contemporary music. He is the Head of Performing Arts, Form 5 Dean and was Master in Charge of Form 4 Camps up until the end of Term 1. He is also the Director of the successful and celebrated Big Band and MIC of the Jazz Combo as well as Master in Charge of Volleyball and coach of the Junior and Senior Premier Volleyball teams

The 2021 recipient of the David William Crowe Award: James Knightly. James has once again played a major role in the performing arts at Grammar. As Master in Charge of Productions, he co-ordinated the School's production of Monty Python's Spamalot this year. The production was celebrated with full houses and engaged audiences.

The 2021 recipient of the Miller Hawkesby Award: Mika Taito. Mika is a skilled counsellor and the Head of Student Services. He is also Master in Charge of the Pasifika Group and the 1st XV Strength and Conditioning coach.

The 2021 recipient of the Dean's Award: Marie Gaspar. Marie is the Form 4 Associate Dean who organises Form 4 Camps, is the Acting Head of French and has significant roles with Duke of Edinburgh programme and Rowing.

The 2021 recipient of the Foundation Trust Teacher Award: Tala Elise. Tala is a History and Social Studies master and Master in Charge of the Pasifika Group. He also coaches and manages the Premier 2 Squash team and is a Tuakana Teina mentor.

The three 2021 recipients of the Foundation Trust Award: Joanne Sadler, Villy Kotze and Cameron Watt.

Joanne is the first face of Auckland Grammar School for many visitors at reception. In her role as Leadership Team Secretary, she compiles many of the School's important reference and archival publications including the School list and School Handbooks.

Villy is the Director of Property Services. This year, Villy has had to oversee and implement the myriad of changing health and safety protocols on campus during the global pandemic. He is the School's liaison for the 150th Project with the Project Manager, site manager, architects, neighbours and Council.

Cameron is the Director of Information Services. His expertise, knowledge of Grammar as an Old Boy (class of 1993) and long serving staff member served the School in exceptional fashion as he oversaw the structures essential for online learning, the delivery of laptops to students/ families in need, and oversight of livestreamed assemblies, online examinations and elife in general.

The 2021 recipient of the Commerce Award: Tom Horrocks. Tom teaches Economics and Business Studies and is the Form 6 Boarding Master at Tibbs House. He also coaches the 2nd XI Gold Cricket and 5B Rugby teams and has assisted with Form 4 camps.

The 2021 recipient of the Mathematics Award: Jacob Rehu. Jacob is a Mathematics teacher and is Master in Charge of Form 3 and Form 4 Mathematics. He is also Master in Charge of the Kapa Haka group, as well as the Master in Charge of Softball.

The 2021 recipient of the Driver/Orange Award for Physics or Mathematics: Jonathan Fry. Jonathan is an experienced teacher of Physics who also coaches a junior T20 Cricket team, the Robotics group and assisted with the New Zealand Young Phycist Tournament in Term 1 as well as the video teaching pedagogy project in association with The Education Hub.

The 2021 recipient of the Marianne and Ursula Kosubke Award for Languages: Michelle McNeill. Michelle is Head of Spanish. She also manages the Senior Gold Hockey team and leads the Spanish Film Club.

The 2021 recipient of the Ken Trembath Memorial English Award: Jayce Pillay. Jayce is an experienced teacher of English across the dual qualification pathway and has coached the Senior B Squash team.

The 2021 recipient of the Technology Award: Alex Johnson. Alex is a skilled Graphics and Technology master who has had responsibility for the School industrial design programmes and has assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards this year.

The 2021 recipient of the Michael Sandelin Award: Charles Laing. Charles is an experience teacher of English and a highly effective Head of Faculty. He plays a significant role in the extracurricular life of the School as the Master in Charge of the Media Studies group, coach of a junior Cricket team and as the Master in Charge of Weightlifting. He is also the Form 5 Boarding Master at Tibbs House.

The 2021 recipient of the Hugh and Campbell Grierson Memorial Award: Ian Rowe. Ian is a skilled Mathematics Master. He is also a Tibbs House Tutor and coaches the 2nd XI Blue cricket team, the Under 15 Blue Hockey team and is Master in Charge of Skiing.

The 2021 recipient of the Philip Newland Endowment Award: Mike Lee. Mike is a Mathematics Master and is known as 'Mr Enthusiasm'. He is also Master in Charge of Table Tennis and oversees the Headmaster's Welfare Committee.

The 2021 recipient of the Merle and Oliver Newland Award: Ashik Malani. Ashik is an English Master. He is also Master in Charge of the Headmaster's Heritage Committee, a Tuakana Teina mentor and coaches the Senior Green Cricket and 15B1 Football teams.

The 2021 recipient of the Gus Fisher Art Award: Justin Boroughs. Justin is an exceptional and long serving art Master. He is also manager of the Under 15A Rugby Team and curates the Headmaster's Council's art collection, and is generous with his support of the Gala Dinner.

The 2021 recipient of the Porus Family Award: Charlotte Forster. Charlotte is Master in Charge of Form 7 Cambridge International Examinations and Scholarship English. She coaches the Premier Advanced 1 Debating team, is Master in Charge of the Literate group and assists with School camps.

There were 18 recipients of the Friedlander Incentive Award in 2021: Paul Easingwood, Frank Haszard, Stiofan Hunter, Gerard Leeuw, Rachel Taylor, Sarah Bluett, Dr Gary Carr, Mark Crook, Matthew Cuming, Gavin Jennings, Bruce John, Sunit Keshwara, Stephen King, Barbara McGowan, Travis Moore, Doug Newton, John O'Neill-Fuller and Nick Wolfkamp.

Paul is Dean of International Students, a Geography and Social Studies master and has recently been appointed as acting Head of Geography. He has coached 5A Rugby and a junior Cricket team as well as running a number of International Department activities during their summer holiday programme.
Frank is Director of Boarding and one of two Cambridge Examination Coordinators. He is an Economics Master and coaches a junior Cricket team. He has provided extensive support in the organisation of Cambridge examinations this year to enable them to start in closed bubbles of 10.
Stiofan is the Form 7 Dean and one of two Cambridge Examinations Coordinators. is a Physics Master and a Tibbs House Tutor. He also manages the 2nd XI Hockey team and the Snowboarding team. With Frank, he ensured the Cambridge examinations could operate in closed bubbles of 10.
Gerard is Head of Faculty - Mathematics. He also runs the School's social Football league, runs morning Mathematics tutorials and assists with Form 4 camps.
Rachel is the Assistant Head of Social Studies and History and co-Master in Charge of the Distance Squad. SHe is an experienced History master who has helped grow the Distance Squad, coped with challenging nationals, helped organise the School cross country and assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh programme and School camps.
Sarah Is Head of Art and Head of Faculty - Art and Technology. Sarah is an experienced Art master who has led the development of the School's new digital art programmes, and facilities to accommodate the programmes. She has continued to be the Manager of the 1st XI Hockey team.
Gary is the Master in Charge of NCEA Chemistry. He is also a Science master and has coached Squash this year. He has been a liaison teacher in the new School Based Teacher Training Programme this year and Master in Charge of the Chemistry Olympiad.
Mark is Head of Technology and the Chief Timetabler. Mark is an experienced Technology and Graphics master who has driven changes in the delivery of the Technology curriculum, has assisted with the School's Snowboarding team and is preparing significant changes to the School's timetabling structures.
Matthew is a Biology and Science master, who has coached the 4A Rugby team, is the Science Faculty e-learning mentor, the Form 4 Boarding Master at Tibbs House and is the Form 3 Dean.
Gavin is Head of Physics. He is a long-serving Physics master who has led the department with its involvement in video teaching pedagogy project in association with The Education Hub. He has coached the 13A1 Football team, the Schools Young Physicist Team as well as managing the New Zealand International Young Physicists Team.
Bruce is Head of History and the Deputy Director of Boarding, alongside Frank Haszard. Bruce is an experienced History master navigating the issues generated about New Zealand's History curriculum this year. He also coaches the 2nd XV Rugby team and manages the Premier Water Polo team.
Sunit is Head of Chemistry and Master in Charge of Football. Sunit is an experienced Chemistry master who has also coached the Auckland Senior B Grade championship winning 3rd XI Football team and the School's Golf team.
Stephen is a Mathematics master, and is the Master in Charge of Cambridge Mathematics. This year, he has managed the Premier Tennis team, coached the Under 15 Gold Hockey team, has been the Mathematics Faculty e-Learning mentor and had the unenviable job of Master in Charge of Scaling.
Barbara is the Head of Faculty - Science and the Principal's Nominee. She is an experienced Biology and Science master who has led the implementation of Health and Safety systems for New Zealand School laboratories and has coached the Premier 2 Debating team. She has led many COVID-related changes to NCEA this year and the organisation of NCEA external examinations.
Travis is the Master in Charge of both Chess and Debating. He is a Classics and Latin master, who has also managed the Advanced Open Debating team as well as coaching two Senior Open teams.
Doug is Head of Business Studies and is an experienced and passionate Business Studies master. He has coached the 7B Rugby team and the Junior White Cricket team as well as running the School's Young Enterprise Competition team.
John is Master in Charge of Form 3 Science as well as Master in Charge of Cricket. He is an experienced Physics master who was actively involved with the video teaching pedagogy project in association with The Education Hub. He coached the Colts Cricket team who were national champions this year, while overseeing the School's cricket programmes. He is also a Tibbs House tutor and assists with the Headmaster's Environmental Committee.
Nick is Master in Charge of the Trades and Construction Programmes. He is an experienced Technology master, has assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards and Form 4 camps and managed the Under 15 Blue Hockey and Under 17B Basketball teams. He has also been the e-Learning mentor for the Technology department.

The 2021 inaugural recipient of the Simcock Family Scholarship: William Chen. William is a Biology and Science master and has embraced the extracurricular life of the School, assisting with theatre sports, the Tongan Cultural Group, School camps and choir camp.
