2023 STAFF AWARD RECIPIENTS

The 2023 recipient of the Joseph McManemin Award: Sylvain Bidet. Sylvain is a teacher of French, Master in Charge of the Distance Squad and Master in Charge of the Duke of Edinburgh programme. He has also assisted with Form 4 camps, Leadership Camp and the annual Rowing Maadi Cup.

The 2023 recipient of the Hatch Coaching Award: Willie Rickards. Willie is a teacher of Te Reo Māori. He has coached sport to the highest level in our school, as Head Coach of the 1st XV Rugby team, who beat King's College and making the semi-finals this year.

The 2023 recipient of the John Hume Award: Stephen King. Stephen is a Mathematics Master, Master in Charge of the Form 7 Cambridge syllabus, Master in Charge of Mathematics with Statistics, Master in Charge of Scaling and Head of Achievement Data Management. Stephen is also the manager of the Premier Tennis team.

The 2023 recipient of the Grammar TEC Rugby Club Award: Chris Oates. Chris is a teacher of Geography and Social Studies. He has once again been the faithful coach of 6A Rugby who won the Auckland competition. He is also involved in Athletics through coaching the School's long and middle-distance runners and supported our cycling team at nationals.

The 2023 recipient of the Munro Award: Ryan Anderson. Ryan is a History and Social Studies Master, teaching the subject across multiple year levels. He is the Head Coach of the 1st XI Hockey team who won both the Auckland and Supercity competitions this year and placed third at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships during Winter Tournament Week (colloquially known as the Rankin Cup).

The two recipients of the Ray Wilson Award for 2023: Jonathan Fry and Jon Hasler.

Jonathan is a Physics master and has assisted with the New Zealand Young Physicists' Tournament as well as the video teaching pedagogy project. Jonathan is also a Tuakana Teina mentor and the Master in Charge of Cycling, overseeing the national champion senior A team who won the Sir Bernard Fergusson trophy.

Jon is a teacher of History and Social Studies. Jon is also the Master in Charge of Mountain Biking, and has played an integral role in the organisation of the New Zealand Secondary School Mountain Biking Championships.

The 2023 recipient of the Lyn Rawlinson Award: Natalie Savery. Natalie started the year as a member of ESOL team, and finished it as Head of Department. She has taught the subject across Forms 5, 6 and 7 and led the subject across all year levels since Term 2. Natalie also coaches a Senior Open Debating team and has assisted with Duke of Edinburgh and the Amnesty International Group.

The 2023 recipient of the Miller Hawkesby Award: Sam van Deventer. Sam is the Student Services Office Manager and is the first point of call for students, assisting them while they receive support from the Student Services team. Sam is also the liaison for School accredited tertiary providers and oversees the requirements of the School's STAR programme.

The 2023 recipient of the Bob Narev Award for Latin/Classics: Sue Haywood. Sue is a teacher of Classical Studies and Latin, who is retiring after nearly 12 years' service. Away from the classroom, Sue has become NZQA's Exam Centre Manager and will maintain an association with the School.

The 2023 recipient of the Ken Trembath Memorial English Award: Rachel Lory. Rachel is an experienced teacher of English and runs the English Mentoring Group, whereby senior students tutor junior students who need extra assistance with English. Rachel has also assisted with the organisation of Prizegiving this year.

The 2022 recipient of the Hugh and Campbell Grierson Memorial Award: Jitesh Sima. Jitesh is a Mathematics teacher and is the Form 7 Associate Dean. In an extracurricular sense, Jitesh is the Head Coach for the Under 15 Hockey team, assisted with Form 4 camps and is a Tibbs House Tutor.

The 2023 recipient of the Merle and Oliver Newland Award: Campbell Wood. Campbell is an English, History and Social Studies Master, is Teacher in Charge of Form 3 English and will be the Master in Charge of Pre-Q (Advancing) English in 2024. Campbell is also a coach for the Distance Squad and the 3rd XI Hockey team and has assisted with Form 4 Camps, Leadership Camp, Duke of Edinburgh and Tuakana Teina.

The 2023 recipient of the Gus Fisher Art Award: Becky Greenslade. Becky is an able teacher of Art who has held several positions of responsibility throughout her tenure. Becky is also the Teacher in Charge of Cambridge Art.

The 2023 recipient of the Chemistry Award: Dr Gary Carr. Gary is a teacher of Chemistry and Science, having worked at the School since 2006. He is the Master in Charge of NCEA Chemistry and is the Teacher in Charge of the Chemistry Olympiad. He has also coached a Squash team.

The 2022 recipient of the Ash Sharma Award for Technology: Andrea Crook. Andrea is a teacher of both Art and Technology teaching junior Art and Technology classes, as well as Engineering Systems and Design for Form 4.

The 2023 recipient of the F. M. and G. H. Carter Family Award for Physical Education: Stuart Blackwell. James is a Physical Education Master and Head of Health. As the year concludes Stuart will be recognised for his 25 years' service to the School. Stuart plays a major role in Athletics at the School, coaching sprints, hurdles and relays as well as coaching Squash.

The 2023 recipient of the Stafford King Award for Social Sciences: Nico Leiseder. Nico is a History and Social Studies Master and the Assistant Head of the History Department. Outside the classroom, Nico is Master in Charge of Athletics and a coach, Master in Charge of Model United Nations. He has also assisted with Form 4 Camps, the Duke of Edinburgh programme, the summer rowing camp and has been a Tuakana Teina mentor.

The 2023 recipient of the Merrilees Family Award for Biology: William Chen. William is a Biology and Science Master and holds the role of Master in Charge of Pasifika Achievement. William has been involved in the extracurricular life assisting with the Tongan Cultural Group and TheatreSports.

The 2023 recipient of the Gardner Family Award: Deane McEntee. As an Old Boy, Deane returned to Auckland Grammar School in 2022 as a Biology and Science Master. Outside the classroom, Deane coaches the 2nd XI Gold Cricket team and the 4B Rugby team. He is also the Master in Charge of SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving).

The 2023 recipient of the Iain Dunning Award: James Yeh. James is an experienced teacher of Japanese and the Form 6 Dean. In an extracurricular sense, James is the Senior A3 Tennis Manager, the Master in Charge of the Asian Cultural Group, supporting the Cultural Evening and the Chinese Extravaganza.

The 2023 recipient of the Rodney Gordon Memorial Award: John Dyer-Causton. John is an English teacher who has held a number of responsibilities within the department. Outside the classroom, John has been involved in the Grammar Writers' Society and Orienteering.

The 2023 recipient of the Milne Family Award: Tom Overbury. Tom is a Health and Physical Education teacher and is the current Form 4 Dean. Tom is Master in Charge of Rugby and is the coach of the 2B Rugby team, and in 2024, Tom will also become a Boarding Master at Tibbs House.

The 2023 recipient of the Service Award: Marie Gaspar. Marie is a French and Spanish teacher, is Head of the French Department and is the Form 4 Associate Dean. Marie plays a significant role in the life of the School as Master in Charge of Rowing, Master in Charge of Form 4 Camps and has assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh programme.

The 2023 recipient of the L. F. J. Houtman Award for Geography: Laura Gilbert. Laura is a Geography and Social Studies teacher and Master in Charge of Junior Geography. She is also Master in Charge of the Asian Cultural Group, including tutoring.

The 2023 recipient of the Daniel Aliaga Memorial Award: Brooke Swaney. Brooke is a teacher of Chemistry and Science and is the Master in Charge of Form 4 Science. In an extracurricular sense, Brooke is Master of Charge of Volleyball, is the manager of the Premier Volleyball and Junior Premier Basketball teams and has assisted with Form 4 Camps.

The 2023 recipient of the Music Award: Christian Hahm. Christina is the is Head of Music teaching across the dual qualification pathway. In an extracurricular sense, Christina is the Director of Grammar Virtuosi, the Symphony Orchestra, the String Ensemble and Concertante.

The 2023 recipient of the Technology Award: Nick Wolfkamp. Nick iis an experienced Technology Master who holds the responsibility of Teacher in Charge of NCEA Trades and Construction. Nick also assisted with Form 4 camps, a leadership camp, Senior Volleyball, 2nd XI Hockey Manager and is a Tuakana Teina mentor.

The two recipients of the Ray Wilson Award for 2023: Vikashni Lal and Gordon Pope.

Vikashni teaches Accounting, Business Studies and Economics across senior levels establishing herself as a skilled practitioner. In an extracurricular sense she has managed a Badminton team.

Gordon is an experienced master, teaching Economics and has also coached the 4A Rugby Team.

The 2023 recipient of the Mathematics Award: Arnold Van den Heuvel. Arnold is an experienced teacher of Mathematics. In addition to teaching Mathematics across multiple year levels he assists with Chess and Tennis. In 2024, Arnold will be the Master in Charge of Tennis.

The 2023 recipient of the Driver/Orange Award for Physics or Mathematics: Liam McClelland. Liam is an able teacher of Physics and is Master in Charge of Form 3 Science. In an extracurricular sense, Liam has been involved with the New Zealand Young Physicists' Tournament, the Auckland Science Bowl, manager of a Basketball team and coach of a Cricket team.

The 2023 recipient of the Marianne and Ursula Kosubke Award for Languages: Travis Moore. Travis is a Classics and Latin Master. Outside the classroom, Travis is Master in Charge of Debating and Chess as well as managing the Advanced Open Debating team, coaching a further two Senior Open teams and is the Assistant Timetabler.

The four recipients of the Foundation Trust Award for 2023: Renee Boonekamp, Maia Hanks, Curtis Johnson and Saule Kenesheva.

Renee is the School's Property Assistant, managing facilities for staff and student use, as well as external users. She is the first point of contact for staff, property related requests and for contractors visiting campus.

Maia is the Student Office Administrator, and is the first point of contact for students and visitors accessing the Student and Enrolment Office. Maia has also been involved with Sports Administration.

Curtis is a support specialist in the Information Services department. He provides help on help desk support to members of teaching and support staff as well as the responsibility for livestreaming.

Saule holds the Accountant's role within the Finance Department and also has responsibility for Payroll.

The 2023 recipient of the Kwek Award: CC Lee. CC is a Geography, Social Studies and Spanish master and is the Junior Academic Dean in 2023. CC is involved in the extracurricular life of the School as the manager of the 1st XI Hockey team. He has also assisted with Duke of Edinburgh and Form 4 camps.

The 2023 recipient of the Porus Family Award: John Wilson. John is the Head of the Commerce Faculty, Head of Economics and a 25-year master. Outside the classroom, John coaches junior Cricket and manages a Badminton team.

The 2023 recipient of the Philip Newland Endowment Award: Mike Lee. Mike is an experienced Mathematics teacher. Outside the classroom, Mike is Master in Charge of Table Tennis having oversight of the Senior team's national championship performance this year and the Headmaster's Welfare Committee.

The 2023 recipient of the Michael Sandelin Award: Alex Johnson. Alex is an experienced Graphics and Technology master who is responsible for the School's industrial design programmes and is Master in Charge of Junior Technology. In an extracurricular sense, Alex assists with the Duke of Edinburgh Programme and the Distance Squad.

There were 18 recipients of the Friedlander Incentive Award in 2023: David Askew, Adrienne Birtwistle, Sam McNaughton, Josh Potaka, Ben Richardson, Simone Bayley, Frank Ben, Matthew Cuming, Joe Gunson, Frank Haszard, Thomas Kensington, Sunit Keshwara, Charles Laing, Gerard Leeuw, Campbell Lowe, Grant Maguire, Barbara McGowan and Ian Rowe.

Dave is the Deputy Headmaster Pastoral - Junior School and a teacher of Physical Education. He was acting Associate Headmaster - Operations in Term 3 this year when Headmaster Tim O'Connor was on sabbatical. In an extracurricular sense, Dave has been the 2nd XV coach in 2023.

Adrienne
is an English Master, a Specialist Classroom Teacher and Master in Charge Basketball. Adrienne was the Acting Deputy Headmaster - Junior School in Term 3 this year when Headmaster Tim O'Connor was on sabbatical. Further to her Master in Charge of Basketball duties, Adrienne manages the social Basketball competition and is a Tuakana Teina mentor.

Sam
is Associate Headmaster - Operations, and is a Mathematics teacher having taught a NCEA Level 2 class for most of the year, following staff sickness. Sam was Acting Headmaster in Term 3 when Headmaster Tim O'Connor was on sabbatical. In an extracurricular sense, Sam is the Colts Cricket coach, overseeing the team winning the Junior National Championships in 2023.

Josh
 is a teacher of Te Reo Māori. In addition to his responsibilities as Master in Charge of Swimming and Water Polo, Josh is also the Head Coach for the Premier Water Polo team, runs the School's Swimming programme in the new pool and has assisted with Form 4 camps. He also assisted with the Nga Manu Korero speech competition this year.

Ben
is Head of Sport at the School and has also taught Physical Education this year. In an extracurricular sense, Ben leads by example as assistant coach of the Premier Water Polo team, he is the 1st XI Football Manager and Master in Charge of Squash.
Simone is an experienced teacher supporting students with learning difficulties. As well as being Head of Learning Support, she is the Master in Charge of the Interact Group.

Frank
teaches Biology and Science and is the Master in Charge of NCEA Biology. In an extracurricular sense, Frank is the Manager of the Premier A Basketball team, he is involved with the Asian Cultural Group and is a Tuakana Teina mentor.
Matt is a Biology and Science Master, the Form 3 Dean and in 2023 was the Form 6 Boarding Master at Tibbs House. Outside the classroom, Matt coached the Under 15A Rugby Team, the Premier Touch Team and junior Touch teams. Matt will be the Deputy Director of Boarding for Tibbs House in 2024.

Joe
is a Geography and Social Studies Master as well as the Form 7 Dean. Joe has coached the 2nd XI Hockey team, and has assisted with Golf.

Frank
teaches Economics alongside his duties as Director of Boarding at Tibbs House. In an extracurricular sense, he continues to coach a junior Cricket team.

Thomas
teaches English and Media Studies and is the Form 5 Dean. Outside the classroom, Thomas is the Assistant Coach of the 1st XI Hockey Team. He also coaches junior Volleyball and assists with Golf. Thomas will be the Form 4 Boarding Master at Tibbs House in 2024.

Sunit
teaches Chemistry, is Head of Chemistry and the Master in Charge of Football. In an extracurricular sense, Sunit is the coach of the 15th Grade Knockout Cup Football team, the 13A1 Football team and the Premier Golf team. He also assisted the 1st XI Football team at nationals this year.

Charles
is an English and Media Studies Master and Head of English. Outside the classroom, Charles is Master in Charge of Weightlifting and coaches a junior Cricket team. He is also the current Form 7 Boarding Master at Tibbs House.
Gerard is an experienced Mathematics Master overseeing all aspects of a successful department as Head of Faculty, including the before school Maths tutorial programme.

Campbell
teaches Physical Education and has numerous additional responsibilities, including Master in Charge of NCEA Level 3 Physical Education, Master in Charge of Pre-Q Physical Education, the Form 6 Associate Dean and the Form 5 Boarding Master at Tibbs House. In an extracurricular sense, Campbell has assisted with the Learn to Row programme and a Leadership Camp.

Grant
is a Geography, Social Studies and Earth Sciences Master. His additional duties include being the NZQA Principal's Nominee and Master in Charge of Cambridge Geography Examinations. Grant also coaches senior Tennis and social Football.

Barbara
teaches Biology, is the Head of the Science Faculty and Head of Academic Monitoring. Outside the classroom, Barbara coaches a number of Junior and Advanced Debating teams.

Ian
is an experienced Mathematics teacher and the School's Chief Timetabler. In an extracurricular sense, Ian is the Master in Charge of Skiing, the Under 15 Blue Hockey. He also assisted with Form 4 Camps this year and the Aerospace group. He is also a tutor at Tibbs House.
