2022 STAFF AWARD RECIPIENTS

The 2022 recipient of the Joseph McManemin Award: Chris Oates. Chris is a teacher of Geography. He has also played a major role in the life of the School this year as Master in Charge of Rugby and coach of the Auckland Champion 6A rugby team. He also coaches Athletics (long and middle-distance runners) and has assisted with Cycling nationals.

The 2022 recipient of the Hatch Coaching Award: Matt Cuming. Matt is a teacher of Biology. He is also the Form 3 Dean and the Form 5 Boarding Master at Tibbs House. This year, he has also coached the Under 15A Rugby Team and the Junior A Touch Rugby team.

The 2022 recipient of the John Hume Award: Richard Daniel. Richard is a teacher of Mathematics, Master in Charge of Form 6 NCEA Mathematics and the Master in Charge of Tennis. He also coaches the Junior A1 team, coaches Football, runs the Asian Board Games, is a Tuakana Teina mentor and has assisted with Form 4 camps.

The 2022 recipient of the Grammar TEC Rugby Club Award: Willie Rickards. Willie is a teacher of Te Reo Māori and Director of Coaching Development. Willie is also the Head Coach of the School's 1st XV Rugby team.

The 2022 recipient of the Munro Award: Jitesh Sima. Jitesh is a teacher of Mathematics and has coached the Under 15 Hockey team. He has also coached the Junior Development Cricket team, assisted with Form 4 camps and is a Tibbs House Tutor. Jitesh has also been appointed to the role of Form 7 Associate Dean for 2023.

The two recipients of the Ray Wilson Award for 2022: Dave Mackay and Debbie Watson.

Dave is the Director of Sports Development. He is also the manager of the 1st XI Cricket team, the Assistant Coach of the Premier Basketball team who were runners-up in the 2022 Auckland competition, the Master in Charge of Golf, the Year 9 Colts Cricket Manager and the coach of the Junior Premier Basketball team.

Debbie is the Headmaster's EA, and graciously accepted the role of Master in Charge of Cycling three years ago. She has grown the sport, developed a strong community of support and the team won Auckland, North Island and New Zealand Team Time Trial titles this year, with the Senior B team second at nationals and the junior team winning the junior national title.

The 2022 recipient of the Lyn Rawlinson Award: Deborah McCutcheon. Deborah is a teacher of Mathematics within the Learning Support team. She has been at the School for 18 years and concluded her tenure in 2022. She has continued to support the School outside the classroom by managing a Basketball team, a proud member of the staff Bridge team and has helped with a variety of sports through her 18 years.

The 2022 recipient of the Miller Hawkesby Award: Ellen Peacock. Ellen is an experienced member of the Student Services counselling team. Away from counselling she has assisted with the Asian Cultural group, in particular with the Lion Dance and then the School's Cultural Night.

The 2022 recipient of the Bob Narev Award for Latin/Classics: Frances Hay-Mackenzie. Frances is a teacher of Classics and Latin, and is the Head of the Classics Department. She is also the staff representative on the Board of Trustees.

The 2022 recipient of the Marianne and Ursula Kosubke Award for Languages: Sylvain Bidet. Sylvain is a teacher of French and is also the Master in Charge of the Distance Squad and the Duke of Edinburgh programme. He also assisted with Form 4 camps, Form 6 Leadership Camp and the Rowing squad at the annual Maadi Cup.

The 2022 recipient of the Ken Trembath Memorial English Award: Irina Itriyeva. Irina is an experienced teacher of English and is also the co-Master in Charge of Student Records of Achievement and assists with the Headmaster's International Committee.

The 2022 recipient of the Hugh and Campbell Grierson Memorial Award: Mark Crook. Mark is an experienced teacher of Graphics and Technology and Head of the Department, as well as driving changes in the delivery of the Technology curriculum. He is also Head of Outdoor Education and has assisted with the School's Snowboarding team and Form 4 Camps.

The 2022 recipient of the Merle and Oliver Newland Award: Rachel Lory. Rachel is an experienced teacher of English, teaching across multiple year levels. She has run the English Mentoring Group, managed a Basketball team and assisted with the organisation of the 2022 Prizegiving assembly.

The 2022 recipient of the Gus Fisher Art Award: Becky Greenslade. Becky is an able teacher of Art who has held several positions of responsibility throughout her tenure. In 2023, Becky will be Teacher in Charge of Cambridge Art.

The 2022 inaugural recipient of the Chemistry Award: Brooke Swaney. Brooke is a teacher of Chemistry and Science. She is also the Master in Charge of Volleyball, the manager of both the Junior and Senior Premier Volleyball teams, and assisted with Form 4 camps this year. Brooke has been appointed to the role of Master in Charge of Form 4 Science for 2023.

The 2022 inaugural recipient of the Ash Sharma Award for Technology: Alex Johnson. Alex is an experienced teacher of Graphics and Technology who has had responsibility for the Industrial Design programmes and is Master in Charge of Junior Technology. She has also assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards this year as well as with the Distance Squad.

The 2022 inaugural recipient of the F. M. and G. H. Carter Family Award for Physical Education: James Hantz. James is an experienced teacher of Physical Education, and is Head of the department and the Head of Faculty. He is the Assistant Coach of the 1st XV Rugby team and was also appointed to the role of assistant coach of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rugby team in 2022.

The 2022 recipient of the Music Award: Eddie Hare. Eddie is an experienced teacher of Music with a speciality in contemporary music. He is also the Head of Performing Arts and the Form 5 Dean. In an extracurricular sense, he is the Director of the successful Big Band and the Jazz Combo as well as the coach of the Premier Volleyball team.

The 2022 recipient of the Technology Award: Nick Wolfkamp. Nick is an experienced teacher of Technology. He has also assisted with the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards and Form 4 camps, has managed the Under 15 Blue Hockey team and assisted with Volleyball.

The 2022 recipient of the Commerce Award: Sam Adam. Sam teaches Economics and Business Studies. He also coaches a junior Cricket team, the 3rd XV Rugby team, the 4th XI Hockey team and assists with the Form 3 Cricket team who just qualified for national finals as well as attending a Form 4 Camp and a Form 6 Leadership Camp.

The 2022 recipient of the Mathematics Award: Arpita Das. Arpita is an experienced teacher of Mathematics and is Master in Charge of Form 5 Mathematics. She is also a Tuakana Teina mentor and manages Football and Tennis teams.

The 2022 recipient of the Driver/Orange Award for Physics or Mathematics: Annette van Heerden. Annette is an experienced teacher of Mathematics and Master in Charge of the Headmaster's Environmental Committee. She also assists with the Duke of Edinburgh Programme.

The 2022 recipient of the Dean's Award: Joe Gunson. Joe is a teacher of Geography and the Form 4 Dean. He also coaches the Under 15 Blue Hockey team, and assists with the Premier and Development Golf teams and Form 4 camps.

The 2022 recipient of the Foundation Trust Teacher Award: Justin Doolan. Justin is a teacher of Business Studies and Commerce who has recently been appointed as a counsellor within the Student Services team. He is also the Assistant Manager of the 1st XV Rugby team, has assisted with Archery as well as managing the Colts Cricket tours of Christchurch and Whanganui.

The three recipients of the Foundation Trust Award for 2022: Amanda Booth, Svetlana Loukine and Jill Mackenzie.

Amanda is the School's Communications Manager. Based in the Development Office, she oversees the delivery of all communications to the School community and has been instrumental in the process of updating the School's website and ensuring its content remains current. She also assists with the School's Media group and the Headmaster's Heritage Committee.

Svetlana is the School's Senior Accounts Assistant who has been a long serving and dedicated member of the Finance team.

Jill is the Music Department Administrator and plays a vital role in the day to day operations of the department, ensuring the smooth running of the itinerant music programme, performance days and concerts.

The 2022 recipient of the Porus Family Award: William Chen. William is a teacher of Biology and Science and the Master in Charge of Pasifika Achievement. He has also assisted with theatre sports, the Tongan Cultural Group, School camps and the choir camp.

The 2022 recipient of the Michael Sandelin Award: Ashik Malani. Ashik is a teacher of English and the Master in Charge of Form 7 NCEA and Literacy. He is also the Master in Charge of the Headmaster's Heritage Committee, a Tuakana Teina mentor, coaches the Senior Green Cricket and 15B1 Football teams and has assisted with the Leadership Camp and the Student Media Group. Ashik is also the Head of Student Leadership and Community Service and Master in Charge of Form 5 English in 2023.

The 2022 recipient of the Philip Newland Endowment Award: Laura Gilbert. Laura is an experienced teacher of Geography and is the Master in Charge of Junior Geography. She also assists with Asian Cultural Group Tutoring, the Chinese Board Games Group and is a Tuakana Teina mentor.

The 2022 recipient of the Kwek Award: Marie Gaspar. Marie is a teacher of French, the Form 4 Associate Dean and the Master in Charge of Form 4 Camps. She is also the manager of the School's Rowing squad and has been appointed to the Head of French for 2023.

There were 18 recipients of the Friedlander Incentive Award in 2022: Charles Laing, Barbara McGowan, John O'Neill-Fuller, Chris Porteous, Ian Rowe, Simone Bayley, Warren Buckingham, Graham Edwards, Frank Haszard, Stiofan Hunter, Thomas Kensington, Sunit Keshwara, Stephen King, CC Lee, Nico Leiseder, Gordon Pope, Josh Potaka and John Wilson.

Charles is an experienced teacher of English and a highly effective Head of Department and Head of Faculty. He plays a significant role in the extracurricular life of the School as coach of a junior Cricket team and as the Master in Charge of Weightlifting. He is also the Form 6 Boarding Master at Tibbs House.
Barbara is an experienced teacher of Biology and Science who has worked tirelessly in performing her many roles within the School including Head of the Science Faculty, Head of Academic Mentoring and Head of Junior Science. She also coaches the Premier 2 Debating team.
John is an experienced teacher of Physics. In addition to his duties as the Master in Charge of Cricket, he coaches the Colts Cricket team who are Auckland Champions. He is also a Tibbs House Tutor and assists with the Headmaster's Environmental Committee. In 2023 he will be the 1st XI Cricket coach.
Chris is a skilled counsellor and outstanding leader of the high performing Student Services Team.
Ian is an experienced master teach of Mathematics. He is also a Tibbs House Tutor and coaches the 2nd XI Blue cricket team, the Under 15 Blue hockey team and assisted with Aerospace Camp and Form 4 Camps in 2022.
Simone is an experienced teacher supporting students with learning difficulties. As well as being Head of Learning Support, she teaches junior English and English Literacy, and is the Master in Charge of the Interact Group.
Warren is an experienced teacher of Latin and is the Head of Latin and Head of the Languages Faculty. Warren is also the coach and manager of the School's Disc Ultimate teams. He has also assisted with Form 4 Camps and leads school-wide singing. He has been appointed to the conductor of Grammarphonics in 2023.
Graham is an experienced teacher of our vocational programmes, overseeing the Gateway and Transition programmes and is the Head of the Vocational and Assisted Learning Faculty. He also managed a social Squash team in 2022.
Frank is an experienced teacher of Economics and has coached a junior cricket team. He is also the Director of Boarding.
Stiofan is an experienced teacher of Physics and a Tibbs House Tutor. He also manages the 2nd XI Hockey and the Snowboarding teams, has assisted with Form 4 Camps and is the Form 7 Dean.
Thomas is a teacher of English and Media Studies. He has also been the Assistant Coach of the 1st XI Hockey Team, coach of the Colts Volleyball team and the Cricket Development Team. He also assisted with Form 4 Camps and has been appointed as the Form 5 Dean for 2023.
Sunit is an experienced teacher of Chemistry and is Head of the department. He has also coached the 13A Football team, the 15th Grade Knockout Cup Football team and assisted with the School's Golf programme.
Stephen is an experienced teacher of Mathematics and has also managed the Premier Tennis team and coached the Under 15 Gold Hockey team. Stephen is also Master in Charge of A2 Mathematics and Mathematics with Statistics.
CC is a teacher of Geography and Spanish. This year he has also managed the Under 14A Rugby Team and the Junior Open Debating team as well as assisting with Duke of Edinburgh, Rowing camps, and Form 4 camps. He is also a Tuakana Teina mentor.
Nico is a teacher of History. He is the Master in Charge of Athletics, and has assisted with the Distance Squad, the Model UN and the Duke of Edinburgh programmes.
Gordon is an experienced teacher of Economics and Business Studies. He has also coached the 4A Rugby team who were Auckland Champions. Gordon also contributed to the 2020 and the 2022 Art House Tours as an artist.
Josh is a teacher of Te Reo Māori and Science. He is the Master in Charge of Swimming and Water Polo and is the Premier Water Polo coach. He has assisted with Form 4 camps this year and managed the School's Swimming programme.
John is an experienced teacher of Economics. He is also the Head of Economics and the Head of the Commerce Faculty. He has managed both Badminton and Cricket teams in 2022.

The 2022 recipient of the Simcock Family Scholarship: Charlotte Forster. Charlotte is a experienced teacher of English Teacher, Master in Charge of Form 4 English and Form 7 Cambridge English. She is also Head of Professional Development. Charlotte is also the coach of the Premier One Advanced Debating Team is Master in Charge of Literati and runs the School's speech competition.

Charlotte has presented to the staff and the International Boys' Schools' Coalition Conference on Boys' and Online Masculinities. She is a member of KERU research project (with UOA) looking at components to strengthen academic knowledge in the curriculum and delivery methodology. Charlotte is working with Dr John Etty and Nina Hood (Education Hub) on an English curriculum project, interviewing experienced teachers about their English teaching programmes aimed at uncovering high quality curriculum.

The 2022 recipient of the Michael Farrell Award: Gerard Leeuw. Gerard is an experienced teacher of Mathematics and Head of Faculty. He also runs the School's social Football league and the morning Mathematics tutorials. Gerard has helped lead submissions on the recent rewrite of the Mathematics curriculum, working with 7 other schools across Auckland.

Gerard has been the Head of Mathematics since 1998 and while service is not a prerequisite for being a master teacher, he is a 25-year master, having now served 32 years on the staff. He was awarded the Headmaster's Council Staff Scholarship in 2002, and he continues to teach across the dual qualification programme, including scholarship Mathematics.
