2020 STAFF AWARD RECIPIENTS

The 2020 recipient of the Joseph McManemin Award: Chris Oates. Chris is the Master in Charge of Rugby and the 1st XV Rugby Manager. He also coaches Athletics, Cycling and the 6A Rugby Team and is a Tuakana/Teina Mentor.

The 2020 recipient of the Hatch Coaching Award: Lionel Randall. Lionel is the Head Coach of the Premier and Junior Premier Water Polo teams and co-coach of the 4A Rugby team. He is also currently the New Zealand Men’s Water Polo Assistant coach and Head Coach of the Junior National Men’s Team.

The 2020 recipient of the John Hume Award: Richard Daniel. Richard is Master in Charge of Tennis and coaches Tennis teams as well as the 13 Gold Football Team. He also runs the Asian Board Games Club and is a Tuakana/Teina mentor.

The 2020 recipient of the Grammar TEC Rugby Club Award: Daniel Reddish. Daniel is the School's Advancement Manager and an assistant Boarding Master at Tibbs House. In 2020, he was the 1st XV Rugby team assistant coach and has coached Rugby at the School for the past seven years.

The 2020 recipient of the Bob Narev Award for Latin/Classics: Frances Hay-MacKenzie. Frances is the Head of Department for Classical Studies and the staff representative on the Board of Trustees.

The 2020 recipient of the Kwek Award: Charlotte ForsterCharlotte is the Master in Charge of the Form 7 Cambridge International Examinations and Scholarship English. She also assists with Debating, Philosophy Club and speech competitions.

The 2020 recipient of the Lyn Rawlinson Award: Deborah McCutcheonDeborah is a learning support teacher and manages a Basketball team.

The 2020 recipient of the Munro Award: Sarah BluettSarah is the Head of Department for Art as well as the Head of Faculty for Art and Technology. She is also the manager of the 1st XI Hockey team.

The two 2020 recipients of the Ray Wilson Award: Sylvain Bidet and Rachel Taylor.

Sylvain plays a major role in the life of the School as a Distance Squad coach and Duke of Edinburgh leader. He also assists with the Form 6 leadership programme and the Parcours French group. He is also the Languages Faculty E-Learning Mentor.

Rachel is the Co-Master in Charge of the Distance Squad, Lawn Bowls Manager and assists with Duke of Edinburgh activities. She is also the Assistant Head of Department for Social Studies and History.

The 2020 recipient of the Music Award: Chris AdamsChris is the School's Director of Performance Music. He conducts the Symphony Orchestra, Grammar Virtuosi and Chamber Music groups as well as running the Minister's Plate and Form 3 Piano Cup competitions.

The 2020 recipient of the David William Crowe Award: James KnightlyJames coordinated the School's production of Grease in 2020, however the production was unfortunately cancelled just before opening night due to COVID-19. He also helped co-ordinate the senior student production, The Brothers Grimm Spectacularthon and the Form 4 Production.

The 2020 recipient of the Porus Family Award: John O'Neill-FullerJohn is the Master in Charge of Cricket and coach of the Junior Colts Cricket team as well as a Tibbs House Tutor. He also assists with the Interact Club.

The 2020 recipient of the Dean's Award: Neitana LobbNeitana is the Form 3 Dean and Head of Department for Te Reo Maori. He is also coach of the 2B Rugby team, a Kapa Haka tutor and the lead mentor for the Tuakana/Teina mentoring scheme.

The three 2020 recipients of the Foundation Trust Award: Joanne Sadler, Jacqui Klaassen and Carrie Fergusson.

Joanne is the Leadership Team Secretary. Joanne is the point of contact for School visitors and compiles many of the School's important reference publications including the School list and School Handbooks.

Jacqui is a School Nurse. She was the key person responsible for insuring the School met its Public Health responsibilities this year with the outbreak of COVID-19.

Carrie is the School's Retail Brand Manager and works in the School Shop.

The 2020 recipient of the Commerce Award: Ross GardRoss teaches Accounting, Economics and Business Studies and coaches the Senior B2 Tennis Team.

The 2020 recipient of the Mathematics Award: Michael Lee. Michael is the Master in Charge of Table Tennis and examination scaling. Mike also tutors the Mathex Team and Scholarship Mathematics.

The 2020 recipient of the Driver/Orange Award for Physics or Mathematics: Tiffany de JagerTiffany is a mathematics master and coaches the Senior Gold Hockey team as well as Water Polo and Swimming teams.

The 2020 recipient of the Marianne and Ursula Kosubke Award for Languages: James YehJames is a Japanese Master and the Form 6 Dean. He is the Senior A3 Tennis Manager and Master in Charge of Asian Cultural Activities. He also ran the Japanese Club, Lion Dance and the Cultural Evening.

The 2020 recipient of the Ken Trembath Memorial English Award: Lauren Potocky-PacayLauren is an exceptional English Master. In addition to this, she is Master in Charge of Form 5 English and the Form 5 Dean, and she also assists with Duke of Edinburgh hikes.

The 2020 recipient of the Hugh and Campbell Grierson Memorial Award: Eddie HareEddie is a Music Master with a specialty in contemporary music. He is the Head of Performing Arts, Form 4 Associate Dean and Master in Charge of Form 4 Camps. He also plays a major role at Grammar as Director of the Big Band and Master in Charge of Volleyball as well as coaching the Junior and Senior Premier Volleyball teams.

The 2020 recipient of the Philip Newland Endowment Award: Chong Chern (CC) LeeCC is an Old Boy (class of 2004) and he plays a significant role in the extracurricular life as Junior Debating Coach, 6A Rugby Manager and leader of the Diablo Club. He was also involved with running the Form 6 leadership programme this year.

The 2020 recipient of the Merle and Oliver Newland Award: Lyall QuelchLyall is an English Master he is also the Master in Charge of Form 3 English, Master in Charge of Fencing and is also the Co-Editor of the Chronicle.

The 2020 recipient of the Miller Hawkesby Award: Chris PorteousChris is a counsellor and a dedicated and a highly valued member of the Student Services team.

The 2020 recipient of the Michael Sandelin Award: Adrienne Birtwistle. Adrienne holds the role of Specialist Classroom Teacher, is an expert English teacher and Co-Master in Charge of the advice and guidance programmes for new teachers. She is also Master in Charge of Basketball, the Social Basketball competition manager and the Under 17B Coach. She also mentors students through the Tuakana/Teina mentoring scheme.

There were 18 recipients of the Friedlander Incentive Award in 2020: Dave Askew, Chris Dunn, John Etty, Daniel Oram, Mika Taito, Simone Bayley, William Chen, Matthew Cuming, Marie Gaspar, James Hantz, Frank Haszard, Stephen King, Charles Laing, Campbell Lowe, Barbara McGowan, Travis Moore, Jacob Rehu and David Wadams.

Dave is an Old Boy of the School (class of 1993), a Physical Education Master and Assistant Coach of the 1st XV Rugby team. He was appointed to the role of Deputy Headmaster - Junior School in 2021.
Chris is the Head of Faculty for Social Sciences and the Director of e-Learning. He teaches History and Social Studies, and he also coaches a volleyball team and is a Tuakana/Teina mentor.
John is the Director of Teaching and Learning. He is also a History Master and plays a major role in the academic life of the School as the Master in Charge of both the University Entrance literacy and the Scholarship Group. John was appointed to the role of Associate Headmaster - Academic starting in Term 2, 2021.
Daniel is an English Master and the manager of the 1st XI Football team. He was appointed to the role of Deputy Headmaster - Pastoral Senior School starting in Term 2, 2021.
Mika is a School Counsellor, the Tibbs House Guidance Counsellor, and the Head of Student Services. He plays a major role in the life of the School as a 1st XV Strength and Conditioning Coach and Pasifika Group Coordinator
Simone is the Head of Department for Learning Support and teaches English literacy. She also coaches the Senior 4 Debating team and assists with the Interact Group.
William is the Master in Charge of Maori and Pasifika Achievement, and a Biology and Science Master. He is thoroughly involved in the extracurricular life of the School, assisting with theatre sports, Pasifika Group, School camps and the choir camp.
Matthew is the Form 4 Dean, and a Biology and Science Master. He is also the Master in Charge of Touch Rugby, coach of the 2B Rugby team, an E-learning Mentor and the Form 4 Boarding Master at Tibbs House.
Marie is the Acting Head of Department for French, and plays a significant role in the extracurricular life of the School, having assisted with Duke of Edinburgh, Rowing and School camps.
James is the Head of Faculty for Physical and Outdoor Education and the Head of Department for Physical Education. He plays a significant role in Rugby at Grammar as the 1st XV Head Coach and runs the Summer Training Squad for Rugby.
Frank is the Cambridge International Examination Coordinator. Frank is an Economics Master and has been appointed to the role of Tibbs House Director of Boarding in 2021. He also coaches a junior Cricket team.
Stephen is a Mathematics Master and is the Master in Charge of the Form Seven CIE A2 Mathematics. Stephen plays a major role in the extracurricular life at Grammar as the Premier Tennis Manager and the Under 15A Hockey coach.
Charles is the Head of Faculty and Head of Department for English. He plays a major role in the extracurricular life of the School as coach of a junior Cricket team and as the Master in Charge of Weightlifting. Charles is also the Form 5 Boarding Master at Tibbs House.
Campbell is the Form 5 Associate Dean and a Physical Education and Social Studies Master. He is the Master in Charge of NCEA Level 3 Physical Education, and the Master in Charge of Rowing. He is also the Form 3 Boarding Master at Tibbs House.
Barbara is the Head of Faculty for Science and the Principal's Nominee. She is a Biology Master and coaches a junior debating team.
Travis is a Classics and Latin Master and plays a major role in the extracurricular life of the School as a Debating Coach and the Master in Charge of Baseball, Debating and Chess.
Jacob is a Mathematics master and Master in Charge of Form 3 and Form 4 Mathematics. He is also Master in Charge of the Kapa Haka group, the Junior and Senior Softball coach and coach of the 7B Rugby team.
David is the co-Master in Charge of advice and guidance programmes for new teachers. David is a Geography Master and is Master in Charge of the Interact club as well as the Master in Charge of Swimming.
